"Reverse Engineering, or breaking of a patent, is what happens when manufacturers find ways to make an invention in a manner that circumvents the claim/s of a patent." -- -- How Does A Patent Get Broken --

-- "Reverse Engineering, or breaking of a patent, is what happens when manufacturers find ways to make an invention in a manner that circumvents the claim/s of a patent. In other words, an invention is made to perform its intended function, but it is put together in a way that does not come under definitions of the claims of a patent. This can be proven legal if there are weaknesses in the way the patent is written. -- On the other hand, if it comes under the claims of the patent, it is illegal and grounds for infringement.

-- What's the payoff in 'breaking' a patent?
-- -- This eliminates the need to pay the inventor's 'up-front' money and royalties, thereby increasing the manufacturer's profit margin." -- Daris Jmill, writing in the Inventors' Network newsletter, June, 1999

"Patent agents are not attorneys-at-law, and as such, cannot conduct patent litigation in the courts or perform certain other services which are considered by the local jurisdiction as practicing law."   -- Energy TechNet Newsletter: Inventions and Innovation's Toolbox for Energy Technology Developers:

**** IP: Patent Attorneys vs. Patent Agents --

**** Patent agents and patent attorneys have expertise in assisting inventors obtain intellectual property (IP) protection of their ideas and inventions. Individuals claiming to be a patent attorney or agent must have passed the Patent Bar Examination.

-- In order to qualify for the Patent Bar, patent agents and patent attorneys must have a university degree in an approved technical field, such as engineering, or an area of science, such as biology or chemistry.

-- The difference between patent attorneys and patent agents is straightforward - patent agents are not attorneys-at-law, and as such, cannot conduct patent litigation in the courts or perform certain other services which are considered by the local jurisdiction as practicing law. For example, a patent agent could not draw up a contract relating to a patent, such as an assignment or a license, if the state in which he/she resides considers drafting contracts as practicing law. Otherwise, both patent attorneys and patent agents are able to prepare and pursue a patent application through the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

-- The USPTO typically regards patent agents to be just as well qualified as patent attorneys, as long as they are registered with the Office.

I wanted to let you know that to-date, I have not received comments/feedback from anyone in the group regarding the TP Misters I handed out. I have sent several e-mails asking for feedback over the past couple weeks with no response. As you know, when you're trying to market a new product, customer feedback (good or bad) is invaluable. I was hoping that the members of the IASL would understand this, and be happy to offer their feedback. Would you be willing to send out an e-mail to the group asking them to send me their feedback? If the request comes from you directly, they may actually follow through. Let me know. Below are the questions I'd like answered, which you can paste into your e-mail to the members. Thanks. Kip Harm

TP Mister - Customer Feedback Form:

1. Did you experience any problems during installation?   If yes, please explain?

2. Did the product function as expected? - Yes No

3. Are there any improvements you'd like to see?

4. Would you recommend TP Mister to a friend? - Yes No

5. Additional Comments: "Fresh Mist Toilet"

-- Quick Joke: A guy goes into a theatrical agency and says, "I can whistle through my anus." -- The theatrical agent says, "Show me." -- The guy drops his pants and begins to defecate on the agent's carpet. -- "Hey, what the Hell are you doing?!!" -- The guy says, "First, I have to clear my throat." :-))
