-- Question: "How do I get my invention on the Oprah Winfrey Show? It is an Invention that everyone would want once they see it?" - Leonard G.-- The "Aha" Answer:
-- "Write a personal letter to Oprah Winfrey. One of her staff may set your message aside [even though you wrote "Personal" on the envelope] to telephone you to learn more. - If you are called to Chicago to show-off your invention, be sure to have a working prototype to demonstrate your brilliance. - There is no assurance that you will be called, so don't be very disappointed. - Read all you can and come to the IASL meetings to learn more." -- R.S.
-- Question:"I spend thousands of dollars over the last 4 years in making my invention. All my family and frends just love it and want one soon as I make more of them. I went on the "American Inventors" tv show and they didn't like it. Only one voted "Yes" for it. I hoped to become rich and have money to make thousands of my "back-scratchers that play a song when you use them." Am I a looser and failure? Should I spent a lot more of my money to do it myself? I know everybody has a back itch now and then and can't reach it. My invention works. and now that I told you how, don't you go off and make and steal my business. I'll wait for your anser. Please help me - Lucy"
-- The "Aha" Answer:
-- "Normally I'd say "Fergetaboutit and Get a Life." But, let's look at this thing as a "Positive."
-- You didn't say how much your back-scratcher would sell for or how much it will cost you to make a thousand units? At the very high end of the market, your item is a specialty item or novelty. There are people who will pay exhorbitant prices for custom products. They will pay hundreds for "quirky" gold-plated toothpicks and belly-button faux diamonds - even for real belly-button diamonds. [I heard of one movie-star putting diamonds on her baby's pacifier!]
-- So, Lucy, make one at a time and peddle it to jewelry stores and upscale gift shops. [They will improve upon it with decorative gold and diamond chips.] They will tell you what they think it is worth? I hope you can make it for a fraction of what they value it so that you will make some kind of profit? -- And if you start selling them 'like hot-cakes,' you may want to craft them in quantity by a manufacturer?
-- Yours is an innovation and not an invention, your thing has been thought of before. Don't waste your money trying to get a patent for it." - R.S.
A Jeweler's Monopoly on Game BlingSidney Mobell calls himself a showman. And that's right on the mark, considering that the 84-year old jeweler is the creator of a $2 million, gold-plated Monopoly game, on display at New York's Museum of Finance through October 2012.
The game, on loan from the Smithsonian's Museum of Natural History, weighs 32 pounds and is covered with 165 gemstones. The cards are 23-karat gold-plated, and the tokens are solid 18-karat gold.
In 1986, Mobell says, he called the game's manufacturer, Parker Brothers, and offered to make a commemorative set for a Monopoly world championship. "Photo-etching the cards was tough," he says.
Mobell, who owned a San Francisco jewelry store for more than 30 years, has created other whimsical pieces, including a 14-karat gold-and-diamond mousetrap. So where does he get ideas? "Who knows?" says the fan of art deco artist-designer Erte. "I think of something as I go to sleep, and write it down before I forget." - Frank McCoy

Subject: Brad Duxbury
Hi Robert,
My name is Brad Duxbury in Australia and my path forward is a mystery having destroyed my business (electrical contracting)that I was going to use to provide funds to get this idea at least to prototype or start up stage, I now have a number of problems and since it would take me 30 years to get back to owning my house and I am 46 I know that is one path that only leads to a life of what ifs.
1. I do not have enough money now to fund international application in 1 year having let last provisional lapse because I had not looked for funds and financially collapsed (now working in a job I can’t do 1000 miles from my home, will have to return to a lower paying job in city soon to attempt to save house)
2. Undecided as to do this for licensing or start up as I need job in the future and this could provide me with technical sales job (like to keep both options open)
3. I proved proof of concept with help of engineers but they will not commit to sweat equity as too much paid work on other innovations
4. Attorney has produced good provisional but haven’t put claims in and feel need input from large company in this sector to have strongest footprint
5. I am not an academic and have huge problems putting the complete package forward
6. This is brilliant and aimed at sporting goods industry and has nearly been made by a different industry but would require R&D from other industry to get correct
7. That other industry I feel should have input into the provisional patent (though attorney says it should hold as is)
8. Since i have no money should I
9. Approach other industry and see if they willing to fund prototype or fund better proof of concept to take forward to sporting goods industry or to begin start up
10. Could I safely show them another use for their product seeking some form of partnership to take this forward (by that I mean if I ask them under confidentiality if they can produce the product as if I were going to be the purchaser for the start up)
11. ( Met start up manager, branding lawyer, top tier new products accountants last year all very excited by my idea but also not willing to sweat equity )
12. Approach young uni students looking for co founders so can put a better case forward for funding for start up or share possible licensing deal
13. Go forward with my unprofessional publications to either industry seeking financial and technical help to get to international patent and hope 1 out of the many players may help otherwise I will have given a lot of people ideas and will have to put in international somehow by approaching way down the chain. Most like Nike say will only accept patented ideas hoping can talk them into provisional being good enough to talk asking for their input into it if interested.
14. This is good enough to go forward to elite Olympians who may have access to the right marketing people in the large companies but what do I offer them
15. I do not have a business plan as there is no real path and I feel it would change huge amounts along the way
16. Even in the sporting goods industry there are 2 different areas I can approach
17. So now that I need money this year do I approach all concerned like a scattergun approach
18. I do not have the business ability to approach angels unless I am asking them to be a founder and put a changeable plan together
19. This is very frustrating but I can’t stop if I do I would be giving up all hope of a decent worthwhile life
20. Could I put website together claiming invention patent pending and ask for donations or shareholders to participate to hold patent and try to form startup and see what happens
Any idea’s at the moment I am going for scattergun but may not get to show to anyone if have confidentiality problems.
Kind regards
Brad Duxbury

After reading your extensive description, I cannot see whether you have anything to prove your inventorship.
1. A 'provisional patent application' is limited in time to one year from the date that the patent office acknowledged it.
2. A provisional patent application does NOT mature into a non-provisional patent.
3. You haven't created a prototype, so you can't use "Patent Pending." You can use a
Non-Disclosure Affidavit in your dealings.
4. You have disclosed the essence of your invention, which invites others to invent around it. [That is not good for you.]
5. You cannot expect others to donate money to you, unless you give back, in kind.
6. You haven't researched the competition.
7. "Ideas are a dime a dozen" and no one will gamble. They place their money on securities and things that they are familiar with.
8. You have to sell yourself to those who would take a chance on you. Everyone favors a winner--and from what you have written, you are opening your statements as a loser. You are cutting your own throat.
Doug, you would do as well by entering a lottery and gambling on winning it. :-(
There are millions like you who think that's all they have to do is come up with an idea, call someone up, and the check 'reward' will be immediately sent to them through the mail.
Doug, if I have kicked you in the teeth, I meant to. This way, you will start over and learn what you should have known--years ago. Read the IASL website!!
[You are not too old to learn the right way.]

second wish was for me to put everything back the way it was before you made your first wish. Thus, you remember nothing, because everything is the way it was before you made any wishes. You now have one wish left."
"Okay," said the man, "I don't believe this, but what the heck. I've always wanted to understand women. I'd love to know what's going on inside their heads." "Funny," said the genie as it granted his wish and disappeared forever, "That was your first wish, too!"

If you want to see through a tent, make parts of your canvas tent from clear flexible plastic; get some plastic windows for it and coat the windows with that gel used on automobile windows that conceals the occupants. Or, just sleep with the flaps up with your head outside and your body inside that tent. - Sleep in a bedroll outside the tent.

I have been in your situation. I developed my product by myself and got it to market. And i thought i would make lots of money and people would rip me off. Guess what. Neither of those things happened. My product was too unsought and niche. The ideas i hear too often fall into that category. My advice to any inventor is to honestly assess the mass market appeal of their idea and be willing to revise their expectations.

Hi I'm Steven Rhodes a young 22 year old inventor who needs to get the ball rolling however Edisonnation takes there little sweet time in finding the right invention to sponsor, that's why I have contacted you, maybe you know who or where to go to have this process sped up. My product is the only one of its kind and there is a huge need for globally not just here in the states (Any large facility that has drop ceiling and a maintenance crew)I'd say thats in every city, hmmmm lots of money). I know my product will make it to the shelves however each day I let pass knowing that my prototype is ready for manufacturing frustrates me, because I am the unlucky type to have it stolen right from under me and I don't want that to happen considering I may never have to work again because of my ingenuity, this product is ready for the public it just needs to move forward on someone else's dime as they will reap the benefits as well. I have prototype and a video of its operation. If you can provide me with the right path to success thank you and have a good day.

Stevin Rhodes -
Of course you have the most desirable invention in the world and your problem is that the door you have opened only fits a small head (or is that 'small body?') and you keep beating your head against a brick wall or one of a harder material and you are afraid that if you stop beating your head, that it will feel good; but you don't want your head to feel good - it's your wallet that should feel no pain, but alas, the more you force yourself with undue determination [as you were told in those books you read], the more time you are spending --> > and it's true, "time is money." But are you wasting your time?
[How should I know?]
You expect me or any other knowledgeable mentor to roll over with ecstatic anticipation because you say that you have an invention that the world needs and you are afraid that the boogeyman will take it away from you - [[You are brilliant and genius - Yes, "YOU" ;-) ]].
Really - I've heard that before!
Let's Play Games: You don't tell me about your Invention and I don't tell you what will make it successful. -- Stalemate.
You may tell me more, and I waste my time?
You tell me more, and I'm impressed!! I won't even steal your idea. (But I won't comment on your idea, either.)
You tell me more, and sweeten my palm with money and I'll tell you enough to keep you from losing sleep, losing valued time, and wasting your money. That's business.
However, I will warn you: Even after telling you:
1. You may not quit working on this idea of yours when you should quit.
2. You may not find angels willing to gamble with/or on you to make you rich.
And as always, as the Genie would say, -"You should be careful when getting what you wish for, for you may live to regret it."

Subject: Fee Based Project Management for your Overseas Sourced Products
Date: Tuesday, November 27, 2007 9:40 AM
Dear Mr. Scheinkman:
My company, Offshore Technologies, Inc., represents a U.S. owned, U.S. managed company located in Shenzhen, China that specializes in sourcing, inspection, packaging, and assembly of product in China. We are not brokers, but instead serve as fee based project managers, depending on the specific requirements of the customer. Our unique approach to sourcing in China provides our U.S. clients with high quality, competitively priced, timely delivered product as well as allowing these client companies direct access to the Chinese manufacturers.
Here are four key advantages to working with us:
· We provide a “firewall” between overseas manufacturer’s and the U.S. market by packaging and assembling product in our own secure facilities in Shenzhen, China, thereby eliminating any concerns over having your product “knocked off”.
· We provide inspection services in China, either at our own facilities or at the supplier’s facility, for the product being manufactured. Inspection is done per your own specific requirements.
· We provide assistance to U.S. companies in identifying and evaluating potential Chinese sources for specific product required by U.S. companies.
· We will manage the sourcing logistics with the overseas supplier(s), with all pricing, logistics, VAT fees, costs, etc. completely transparent to you and your company.
Would these services be of interest to you and/or your membership? Please let me know if you would like further information. Thanks, Bob Burgess.

-- Attention Inventors: Your Packaging Is As Important As Your Patent-- Inventors invent products, but it is the packaging that is going to sell them. The average consumer spends less than three seconds making up their minds whether or not to buy a product. Consequently, you need to influence that purchasing decision. The best way to do that is with the right packaging. The right package is your "silent salesperson" and it will create the buzz that will compel consumers to pick your product off the shelf or place an order from the Internet.
-- Packaging is your finest and most cost effective option to persuading consumers to pick up your invention and take a closer look. Be aware that packaging an invention or a product is complicated. One mistake and you could be back to square one -- not only will the consumer not buy your product it may not even see the retailer’s shelf. Everyday I hear horror stories about product packaging that failed at retail or never made the grade to make it to the shelf. Recently, a QVC representative told me that only one out of five products make it through the QVC quality process.
She indicated that much of the failure is derived from poor packaging. When that happens, unfortunately, you have wasted a lot of money in the process. The average product invests $7,000 in package design and development before the launch. So, it pays to do it right the first time and understand the obstacles before they become insurmountable.
-- So what's an inventor who knows nothing about packaging or even where to start supposed to do? I have created just the resource for you, "Packaging Your Invention." You can find packaging insider tips, technologies and packaging innovations to help you get started at http://packagingyourinvention.com/. There is plenty of free advice to point you in the right direction.
-- Why should you listen to me? I have more than 30 years of extensive experience in packaging. When I spoke at the Invention Show, a listener had this to say about my program on "Packaging Your Invention To Sell." :: "I learned a lot of good information about packaging. Your class opened my eyes to the importance of good packaging and how it relates to your invention's success. I could tell that you have extensive knowledge and keep up on all the trends of the industry." (signed) The Average Inventor
-- So don't wait until it is so late that you are going off in the wrong direction with your product packaging. When you think about your patent, think about your packaging too. The most important thing to remember is that without a package you cannot have an invention in the market place and without the right packaging your invention will never sell.

Subject: 1 Message from MarketLaunchers: St. Louis manufacturer looking for new products
Date: Tuesday, November 8, 2011 2:56 PM
Dear Inventor --
Market Launchers has just contracted with a plastics manufacturer here in St. Louis that is looking to acquire additional consumer products to sell in retail stores. We are looking for products that are “Little, portable affordable items that make your life better.” Here are the details:
Products do not have to be retail-ready, because the company is a plastics manufacturer and can manufacture them. It should be pretty far along in the development stage, though.
The company will take care of the packaging so that each product has the same feel as the rest of their line.
The company prefers products that are patented or patent-pending, but they might sign an NDA in some cases.
PRICE POINTS: Product must be able to be manufactured for around $2.50 or less, and it should retail for $10 or less. If you’re unsure, just ask me.
If you are already selling it in retail stores, your website or on TV, that is OK.
The company is a new client of mine, and they have their own product line and are looking to expand it. If you think your product(s) meets the above criteria, then please send an e-mail to me (Paul Niemann) at niemann7@aol.com with either of the following info:
1. Your web site address, and your contact info.
OR
2. A description, including pictures, and your contact info. If you have a picture of the packaging, please include that, too.
Here’s what you will get from me within 48 hours of your product submission, via e-mail:
Either an “I’m going to submit this to my client.”
OR
an “I'm sorry, but it’s not what we’re looking for.”
Either way, you will hear back from me within 48 hours. Thanks!

Paul Niemann

Subject: prime time show for inventors
Date: Monday, July 19, 2010 5:48 PM
Dear Inventors,
--> Please read the submission guidelines below and if you are interested, direct all submissions to Scott Michnick at scott@krakenpictures.com.
--> A new prime-time show for major cable network is looking for Inventors to showcase their creations. The program will feature two hosts (who are experts in invention/innovation/product development) who travel around the country meeting people who are working on "the next great idea".
--> They are looking for inventors who have:
- Mechanical Masterpieces – Does your invention have lots of cool moving parts?
- Does it aid in the transportation industry? (increase fuel efficiency, use alternative fuels?)
- Does it feature green energy?
- If not any of the above, can it be "tested/demonstrated" in interesting ways. The more creative the test, the better. - Can we take it to the "mall/store/main street" and have people try it out? Could we give it to "the target market" and have them try it out for the day? Can our hosts use it? Obviously inventions don't all fit into this category, but the more "hands on" the product, the better.
- Is it an AWESOME, MUST LEARN MORE ABOUT thing?
- If you product doesn't fit the above, but your invention is “just plain fun,” email us!
- Inventors who have made major personal sacrifices in order to get their ideas off the ground are also very desirable.
--> Interested inventors please email Scott Michnick (scott@krakenpictures.com) the following...
- Photo of you and your product.
- A couple of paragraphs describing who you are and your general location (so we can map out our "road trip" geographically). Describe your product / how it works, why is it better than “what’s already out there?” and outline any personal sacrifices you've made to make your product come to life.
- Links or video clips of you and your product in action.

Subject: [Inventors Council] Exploring Trademarks-It's all in a name Free Workshop Sat. Feb. 26, 2011, 10am-12pm
Date: Friday, February 11, 2011 10:36 AM
Free Workshop!
Exploring trademarks;
It's all in a name
A trademark is a powerful tool for establishing a product in the marketplace. Jay Sorensen, the inventor of the "Java Jacket"®, has remarked that his trademark is more valuable than his patent. Why? People remember the trademark of his product, not the patent number. How do you go about getting a trademark or service mark? The first thing you have to do is to determine whether your trademark is currently being used by another business in the marketplace.
The Wright State University Libraries is offering a free trademark workshop. This free workshop is Saturday, February 26th, from 10am to 12pm. in Room 241 of the Paul Laurence Dunbar Library on the WSU campus.
Designed for those with little to no knowledge about intellectual property marks, the workshop will review trademark basics, including the difference between federal registration, state registration and common law marks and how to file for a trade or service mark. The mechanics of searching registered marks will be demonstrated using the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Web site and the USPTO trademark database TESS. A hand's on portion will allow participants to practice some of the skills needed to determine if their trademark is already in use in the marketplace.
Seating for the workshop is limited. For more information or to register, contact Ran Raider, government and legal information coordinator for the University Libraries, at ran.raider@wright.edu or by calling (937) 775-3521.

Subject: THE ONLINE INVENTOR -- DRTV company looking for new inventions
Date: Thursday, February 17, 2011 2:43 PM
Dear Inventor –
URGENT: I have an important announcement for you:
I received a call on Tuesday from a DRTV company that is looking to acquire a few new products that meet the following criteria. If your invention qualifies, you can submit it to me directly BY E-MAIL ONLY. Please see below for directions.
UNIQUE – Most people would view the product as new and different
MASS MARKET – The product should appeal to the majority of TV buyers
SOLVES A PROBLEM – The product solves an everyday problem
PRICED RIGHT – The product should ideally be able to be priced at $20 or less including a 5 times markup ($1 – $4 cost of goods for a product is the norm). With this pricing, the product must still retain a high perceived value versus its price.
EASILY EXPLAINED – The product can be demonstrated and the viewer can understand what it does typically in just 10 seconds.
AGE APPROPRIATE – The product should typically appeal to people over the age of 50 (at a minimum it should not exclude this group)
CREDIBLE – Most people must believe it works as advertised.
EXPANSION POTENTIAL – The product has a better chance of being a hit if it has retail distribution potential, product line extension potential, continuity revenue potential, and natural product upsells and crosssells.
And that falls into one of these categories:
Kitchen Products (Choppers, Slicers, Storage, Pans, Knives, Gadgets, etc.)
Bathroom Products (Hands-free Dispensers, Electric Toothbrushes, Faucet Fountain, etc.)
Beauty & Personal Care (Hair Removal, Pedicure, Hair Accessories, Wraps, etc.)
Housewares (Floor Care, Organizers & Storage, Reachers, Microwave Products, etc.)
Home Improvement (Painting Products, Tools, D.I.Y. Solutions, etc.)
Pet Products (Brushes, Nail Clippers, Feeding Solutions, Litter Solutions, Cleaners, etc.)
Accessories (Sunglasses, Purse Organizers, Gadgets, etc.)
Fitness (Ab Products, Push-up/Pull-up Products, Workout Solutions, etc.)
Lawn & Garden (Growing Solutions, Tools, Watering Solutions, etc.)
Elderly Products (Sound Amplifiers, Mobility Products, Medical Alarms & Pendants, etc.)
THE PRODUCT MUST BE READY FOR RETAIL (meaning that if your product is in prototype stage, then it’s not ready). Here’s how to submit your product to me, if it meets the above criteria:
Send me an e-mail with either of the following info:
1. Your web site address, and your contact info. I can make an initial decision from your website. If more info is needed, I will let you know.
OR
2. A description, including pictures, and your contact info. If you have a picture of the packaging, please include that.
Here’s what you will get from me within 48 hours:
Either an “I’m going to submit this to my client” response via e-mail
OR
a “Sorry, but it doesn’t fit” response via e-mail.
Either way, you will know within 48 hours.
Your contact info should include: Full name, e-mail address, mailing address and phone number. Thanks!
Best Regards, Paul Niemann

This May Be Your Lucky Break
“You lucky dog” thought I, as Breanna told me about this golden opportunity. Then I went on the website to check it out and thought, “Oh yea, I’ve seen some of these shows.” However, this is the production company. They are doing the prescreening for the producers. They are not at liberty to say who the producers are or what type of deal they are making.
The information she gave me in confidence sounded terrific. It is a documentary for a major Network about food inventions and related items. The two people involved are very well known in the industry and There Will Be Incentives!
However, I must caution you to read and understand everything you sign. I know, I always caution you to do this. I feel like a mother hen when I am doing it but everyone who gets these emails, I consider a personal friend and I don’t want to see any of my friends get burned.
I also don’t want you to miss the opportunity of a life time. So if you fit the profile by all means get your name in there and do it NOW while you’re motivated. You can always turn down the offer if you don’t like it.
Remember, this is for TV. When you write your description of your product give it Life! All the emphasis I usually put on numbers and statistics, use None of that here. OK, maybe one or two that might be real interesting or drive home a significant point directly related to your product.
Go to their website WWW.LUCKYDOGFILM.COM and watch the video. They are into action. You have to impress them to get past them but it doesn’t have to be Exploding Hot Dogs.
Think about food shows on related products and how they keep your attention. Even when talk shows do segments on new products. Then bring out those attributes in your product.
Show how clever it is, how useful, how delicious, how much healthier it is, how much FUN IT IS! A 1 or 2 minute video could be attached since you are answering an email. A funny or heart string story can only help but keep the entire thing as Short as possible.
These are extremely busy people under strict deadlines. You need to impress them quickly. Make your first sentence call to them. A good rule of thumb, in these situations, is a long presentation will not be read.
There are NO confidentiality agreements with the Television Audience. It is a Huge Public Disclosure! That’s why you need to have at least an application in place.
Please, let me know if you are one of the Lucky Dogs who got on the show,
Leo Mazur
CASTING CALL
INVENTORS NEEDED
Lucky Dog Films is currently producing a show for network television featuring inventors and their creations. We are just starting our casting process, so we are searching for inventors to feature on the show. If your invention can somehow be connected to food—whether it be growing, processing, preparing, storing, serving, disposing, etc, we’d like to hear from you!
Show premise: Our two hosts travel the country to seek out inventors who may be on the brink of something big with their creations. Each episode will feature three inventors and their household kitchen or food-related creations. On network television, we will have the opportunity to learn how the inventors came up with their ideas, and potentially go all the way to the top with a pitch and deal with one of the nation’s top manufacturing/distributing companies.
If you are interested in being considered for the show, please contact us! Let us know who you are, and what household kitchen or food-related invention you have come up with—be sure to include your contact information! We are in a hurry to cast, as we begin filming our first episode early May! We will only be able to consider applicants who have working prototypes and a patent (or a pending patent).

Hey Robert,
My name is Sarah [Sarah Horton] from Invent Yourself Rich, and I am
reaching out to inventor clubs to provide them with a
Free Copy of Don Brown's eBook.
Don's goal this year is to help inventors avoid all those
invention scams, so he’s giving away FREE copies of his
book- "Invent Yourself Rich."
I can attest to all the great and helpful information that Don teaches in his book. The best part is that he has gone through the invention process multiple times and has made all the mistakes in the past so that he can help inventors avoid all those costly mistakes now and in the future.
If you are interested, all you have to do is direct your
members to the "Invent Yourself Rich" website,
(www.inventyourselfrich.com) and download Chapter 4
of Don’s eBook for FREE. And if everyone likes it and wants
to read the whole book, just shoot me an email,
(Sarah@inventyourselfrich.com) or to Don Brown,
(Don@inventyourselfrich.com) an e-mail and I will send
a free copy of our book to you to offer to all members
of your group. I look forward to hearing from you.
Keep Inventing,
Sarah

3 Ways to Persuade
The U.S. presidential campaign kicked into high gear where both sides were pulling out all of the rhetorical stops to try to persuade folks to pick their candidate. - Barack Obama, as most everyone knows, won the U.S. Presidency.
For a little perspective on the art of persuasion, we will turn to a political commentator unlike any on TV. We're turning to famous Greek philosopher Aristotle (384-322 BC). He wrote the book on rhetoric--called The Art of Rhetoric--way back in the 4th century BC.
We asked Aristotle, how should politicians persuade? He told us that, aside from "tortures, depositions, and the like," there are only three ways: logos, pathos, and ethos. In English, you might say logic, emotion, and character. Put it all together, and you get a reasonable argument, passionately made, by a person you trust.
1. Logos
Logic is an obvious one. After all, who isn't a sucker for irrefutable facts, verifiable numbers, and the inexorable march of reason across the course of a well-constructed speech? In fact, for many thinkers, including Aristotle's mentor, Plato, logos is the only legitimate way to win friends and influence people. The rest is sophistry.
Logos was even more persuasive to ancient Greek philosophers, because they had a pretty expansive notion of what logos was. It could be the simple reason in the words of a speech, or it could mean the supreme reason of the universe, which all rational appeals naturally plugged into.
2. Pathos
Still, unlike old Plato, Aristotle was willing to look beyond strictly rational appeals. He recognized that people "do not give judgment in the same way when aggrieved as when pleased"--especially, he snobbily wrote, "audiences of limited intellectual scope and limited capacity to follow an extended chain of reasoning."
Enter pathos. Let's face it, said Aristotle. If you really want to persuade people, sometimes you have to resort to emotional appeals. It's why campaigns try to wrap themselves in the flag and make you fear the other guy. It's why a winning smile and puppy-dog eyes work magic in getting your way. It's why lawyers have the saying "If the facts are on your side, pound the facts. If the law is on your side, pound the law. If neither is, pound the table."
Of course, emotional appeals can take more subtle forms, too. Aristotle pointed out that eloquence itself is a kind of emotional persuasion. "Style makes the matter more persuasive," he wrote, "for the mind is tricked as though the speaker were telling the truth."
3. Ethos
For a reason-loving philosopher like Aristotle, admitting the power of pathos had to be hard enough. But he goes even further with ethos. "Character," he wrote, "contains almost the strongest proof of all."
Quite simply, it matters who's trying to persuade you. If the person trying to sway you shows "common sense, virtue, and goodwill" (for Aristotle, an ethical trifecta), then really, aren't you more likely to believe what that person says? Aristotle thought so, and so thought that persuasive attempts must work to "establish the speaker himself as being of a certain type"--namely, the type of person you'll believe.
Sometimes ethos is the only thing that matters. If, based on arcane medical tests, one doctor says you need immediate surgery, and another says you don't, how are you going to decide--except by judging who seems more credible? Similarly, lawyers put dueling experts on the stand, and politicians put dueling wonks on TV. Their reasons are obscure and technical, and only ethos makes the sale. That's why the old vaudeville philosophers used to say, "If you can fake sincerity, you've got it made."
